The HDC-SD1’s somewhat bulky build might require the need for both hands in handling – one for leveling and the other for shooting. The positioning of the controls for menu navigation could also be a bit uncomfortable to reach if you need to adjust shutter speed, white balance, iris, and other advanced settings.
The quality of still photos is also uncompromised if printed by up to 8 x 4.5” in size. Playback on HDTV will result in clear images though maybe not as clear when rendered into a video editor. This is due to the undersized pixel sensors of 520,000. Available at an average price of USD 500, the Panasonic HDC-SD1 will meet the expectations of beginners and is ideal for travel and home use. Other features include 5 scene program modes, backlight, MigicPix Night Mode, audio wind filter, a zoom mic, a tele-macro mode, soft-skin mode, and zebra stripes.
How would you describe your camcorders video and audio quality?: Good What are your camcorders controls like to use?: Easy What do you like most about your camcorder?: Really nice to use with good controls at your fingertips. Excellent 'anti-shake' feature. 5.1 surround sound microphone. Records video to SD memory card, so no tapes or hard drive needed. Huge video quality improvement on my last SD camcorder. Big 3" LCD screen. What do you NOT like about your camcorder?: AVCHD is new technology and is not compatible with a lot of things including DVD players and editing software. Video quality is not as good as HDV camcorders, but still stunning if you are used to standard definition camcorders. Anything else you would like to tell us about your camcorder?: I was blinded a bit by the new technology and gadgets it had to offer, but in reality, AVCHD has caused all sorts of headaches that if I had known about them before hand, I would have bought something else. Joystick navigation would take a little getting used to but could be quite enjoyable and rewarding once the user is familiarized with it. The video quality of the Panasonic HDC-SD1, however, will definitely not disappoint. Footages are guaranteed to be sharp with defined contrasts with bright and vivid colors. Noise is also controlled in low-light shots.
