The Samsung SC-DC173 can produce decent colored images in bright lights and dark lights. The good color performance when mixed with poor sharpness results to an overall image that is fuzzy and unclear. Therefore one should fix the setting when taking pictures.
The Samsung SC-DC173 records videos in DVD-R, +RW, -RW and +R format. These formats are available at non-electronic stores like pharmacies. The single disc can pretty much hold a 20-minute long footage and it is already in the highest quality setting possible. The Samsung SC-DC173 can also be hooked up into a PC so that the videos and images can be transferred.
This camcorder is tall but thin. It fits really nice in my hand. The strap is perfect for my grip and helping to keep my hand steady. It may not look like much with all of the bells and whistles that other camcorders have, but it has what I need and looks just fine to suit my standards. All of those negative reviews state that the manual controls are sub par. The fact is that I don’t use the manual controls at all. I much prefer to just be able to point and shoot my movies. The auto features work just great for me. I will admit that the stability control could be better, but I am happier about the overall features that this camcorder offers me as a beginner. It records directly to a mini DVD and will play in most DVD players. I had no problem with mine. It can be difficult to edit the movies because of the way that the Samsung records the footage, but once again, I am not going to be going into that much depth with my home movies. If my husband chooses to do so, then he can attempt to edit the footage. I just like the fact that I can pop the DVD right into my DVD player and start watching. If I had listened to all of the negative reviews, then I would have ended up paying a lot more for a higher end camcorder that has a bunch of features I wouldn’t use anyway. It's absolutely perfect for the beginner and that is what I am." Annette Reading. New York. USA.

Photographers who are point-and-shoot and are not interested in manual controls will have an easier time with the Samsung SC-DC173. For example, when using the auto focus button, the functions are efficient. Unfortunately, the auto exposure has the tendency to leave the shadows in the dark and to emphasize the bright light on bright areas. Then again, since point-and-shoot photographers are used to manual intervention, they can tweak the image for better results.
