New Canon Camcorders Announced At CES 2008.

*VIDEO* Canon PR Manager Talks About The New Canon Camcorders At CES 2008.

Canon HF100 camcorder There was a nice collection of new Canon camcorders at CES this year including the Canon HF100 (pictured left - $899) and Canon HF10 ($1099): True high definition camcorders that shoots real HD 1920 x 1080 using the AVCHD codec to SDHC memory cards or, in the HF10's case, to it's internal built it 16GB of flash memory.

They have optical image stabilizer, 12x optical zoom, shoots in 30p (Better quality when uploading to online video sites like YouTube) as well as 24P and 60i, captures stills up to 2048 x 1536, manual controls for everything and a camcorder microphone input.

Canon FS100 There was also a bunch of new Canon camcorders for customers who don't get, don't want or don't need high definition with the release of three standard definition models: the FS100 ($399), the FS10 ($499), and the FS11 ($599).

The FS100 (Pictured right), is the entry model and records only to SDHC cards, whilst the other two have built-in internal flash memory as well (8GB & 16GB).

All have an on-board video light (Waste of time as it won't be bright enough for anything!), microphone inputs, but no headphone jack.

You can shot still picture up to 1152 x 864 resolution and they have a 2.7" LCD viewer. They all house the Canon advanced zoom system, which means you can extend the optical zoom range from 37X to 48X. Great if you have a tripod to hand!

Canon HV30 camcorder Other new Canon camcorders revealed at CES 2008 was the Canon HV30 (pictured left - $999), the successor to the outstanding 2007 'camcorder of the year', the HV20.

Seems a bit of a rush job this, as the only upgrades are being able to shoot in 30p mode which makes uploaded videos to YouTube look better and a new black finish. Pretty much the same other than that. Bit disappointing!

Canon also have announced the release of three standard definition DVD camcorders, which is one down on last year and a trend that will only get greater as flash memory and HDD camcorders becoming the norm.

New Canon Camcorders

Canon DC330 camcorder The Canon DC310 ($349), DC320 ($369), and DC330 (pictured right - $379), all sport the all-improved Canon 41X Advanced Zoom, which Canon are quick to point out is NOT like digital zoom at all ;-), 2.7" LCD screens, Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and the all important SDHC card slots to show these camcorders are bang up to date.

The Canon DC310 can capture still photos up to 1024 x 768, whilst the DC320 and DC330 can go all the way up to 1152 x 864 if you want to. They all have LCD joysticks, AV out, and multiple SDHC/MMC/SD card slots.

You can shoot up to 9Mbps and your camcorder will last for 108 minutes in this setting before the battery goes on you.

You can use –R, -RW, and –R DL DVD formats to record on, whilst the Canon DC330 is the only model that will have a USB connection, be PictBridge compatibe, have a remote and comes with some editing software for your exclusive AVCHD characteristics.

There are three, count them, three new SD miniDV camcorders from Canon this year and although there is little in the way of upgrades, it's nice to see Canon making the effort for this dying format. I think they still have a place with the budget customer who just wants to take the odd bit of video and doesn't really care if the video quality isn't razor sharp.

The Canon ZR900 ($249), ZR930 ($269) and ZR950 (Pictures below - $279) are here and they all have the heralded Canon super Advanced Zoom feature that Canon are so excited about this year (I don't know why as most people using these types of camera are not going to be using tripods, so the resulting video is going to be very shaky!!).

They all have a mic jack which is nice, but I wonder how many users at this price bracket will use it. Only the ZR950 has the capability to take still pictures, but loses the mic jack for a SD card slot. Swings and roundabouts I guess. Still, very attractive pricing again from Canon.
