Samsung Camcorders

Samsung camcorders are aimed at the 'cheap and cheerful', fire and forget, budget end of the camcorder consumer market.

Samsung struggles to keep up with the big four camcorder manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC), who all offer much better models in the same price bracket.

Samsung camcorders are available in dvd format, miniDV format, digital memory (flash and memory card) format, as well as a new HD model that records on built in flash or memory card.

The Samsung DVD camcorder SC-DC173 (dvd format) currently offers the best bang for your buck with OK video performance, but design and handling is poor. And don't even bother trying to record to the flash memory, because the image quality is terrible.

Fine for casual point and shooters, but probably best to first check out models from other manufacturers first.

Samsung have finally entered the HD (High Definition) camcorder race, but may have left it a little too late with average video performance and handling.

The newly announced compact Samsung SC-HMX20C 8GB High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom featuring full HD, 1080p mode with 30 frames-per-second recording (Means you can slow down things like golf shots and see them in slo-mo) could be a step in the right direction. With the same swivel-grip design as the SC-HMX10, the SC-HMX20 houses a 1/8-inch CMOS chip that records to a 8GB flash memory internal drive.

Samsung SC-HMX20C The SC-HMX20C records directly onto flash memory sticks with 8GB already pre-installed (I bet that number is going to start sounding small pretty fast), so no tapes or heavy hard disk drives.

The SC-HMX20C Includes a docking station and fast HDMI connection to your LCD or plasma TV.

Still photo image quality on the SC-HMX20C is reported (by Samsung!) to be the best in any camcorder currently available today.

Could be one to look out for, but I doubt Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC are losing any sleep over it if past Samsung digital camcorders are anything to go by.

There are three standard definition new Samsung camcorders on offer for 2008. The SC-MX20 ($299) records to memory card, the SC-D382 ($199) uses MiniDV tape and the SC-DX103 ($299) is a DVD camcorder.

samsung camcorder Not the most inspiring line up from Samsung and they're clearly maintaining their budget product line with only the Samsung SC-HMX20 offering any kind of high-end capability.

All have 34x zoom. The SC-MX20 uses H.264 compression and records at 720 x 480 onto MMC and CDHC memory cards. The swivel-grip is used again here and it has a 2.7" LCD.

The SC-D382 is the same as all their other miniDV camcorders, so nothing new here.

The SC-DX103 has the swivel-grip as well and records to 8cm DVDsv using MPEG-2. 2.7" LCD and, like the SC-MX20, the battery has been placed inside the camcorder to improve looks, but will actually just result in lower battery times. Pretty uninspiring stuff.
