Sanyo Camcorders Overview

Sanyo digital camcorders have an undisputed claim to fame.

They introduced the World to the smallest and cheapest HD (High Definition) camcorder in 2006, the Sanyo VPC-HD1.

In 2007, they brought out the successor, the VPC-HD2 (very original!) but by then, they were not alone in the marketplace.

The Canon PowerShot TX1 boasts a similar spec recording 720p video, but it is marketed as a digital camera that just happens to take HD video as well.

Confused? I think Sanyo are as well.

They don't even call the VPC-HD2 a camcorder. It is marketed as a "digital media camera”. They are clearly heading for their own little niche and carving a name for themselves as a true hybrid digital camera/camcorder.

Trouble is, I don't think the likes of Canon are going to let them have it all their own way and I would be very worried indeed if a company with Canon's reputation for quality, excellence and technological advancement were hot on my heels.

You just know it's simply a matter of time before they overtake and come screaming past.

Although the VPC-HD2 can take 10mp stills, record in HD and can fit in your pocket without looking like your dreaming of Pamela Stephenson in the shower, the video quality is not good, the menu is confusing, you need a magnifying glass to see the LCD viewfinder properly and it handles like a bag of spanners.

But it does take a nice photo.

So if top notch quality video isn't important to you and you just want to point and shoot from your handbag every once in a while, then Sanyo digital camcorders could be exactly what you're looking for.
