Sony Camcorders Overview

Sony digital camcorders are the market leaders when it comes to producing easy-to-use, point-and-shoot digital camcorders.

They are also normally very stylish and easy on the eye. Maybe not quite in the Apple league, but not far off.

Domestic consumers (You and me) who just want to throw a compact digital camcorder into a bag, point and shoot great looking video without having to push buttons and twiddle knobs just love Sony digital camcorders.

And with good reason. The build and lens quality, user friendliness and good looks of Sony camcorders are normally way above average.

Sony also not only have the most camcorder models currently available, but they also have the most media formats available as well.

As well as miniDV, DVD, HDV and HDD (Hard Disk Drive) digital camcorder, they have also developed (Along with Panasonic) AVCHD, which records the video straight onto a Sony memory stick.

This means no moving parts like the HDD camcorders and a big reduction in size and noise.

AVCD stand for Advanced Video Codec High Definition and is a new high-definition recording format using the much resepcted H.264 video codec.

If this is starting to sound a bit geeky to you, it basically means that a AVCD camcorder can record more video footage onto the Sony memory stick and be of better quality.

AVCD can be recorded onto the small 8 cm recordable DVD discs used in Sony DVD camcorders, a hard disk (HDD), or flash memory cards like the Sony memory stick.

With flash memory getting bigger and cheaper, this format is the one to watch, although not all editing software currently support it. So you could have problems making a DVD of little Jimmys birthday party unless you buy a software upgrade ;-)
