The DCR-DVD201 comes with a .20” CCD with a 1.07MP gross though lacking the 10x optical zoom that is featured in the Sony DCR-DVD101. However, it is packed with the Sony LCD and the highly convenient recording format of DVD-R/RW discs. Users will surely be pleased as the camcorder is also equipped with an accessory shoe and microphone input.
A downside for the DCR-DVD201 is its sub-par low-light performance and the lack of media for still shots. There is more to be desired in terms of color balance and blue noise, which could be noticeable in videos taken via this camcorder. On a positive note, the camcorder has been made more affordable since its release in 2004. From about USD 1,000, it is now priced at about USD 600 or lower. The Sony DCR DVD201 is a good option if you are looking for a basic DVD-RW disc recorder.

The gadget’s manual controls are convenient compared to its counterparts in Panasonic and Hitachi. The dials are conveniently and logically positioned just beneath the LCD screen. The controls in this area cover the exposure, focus, and balance functions plus exposure presets for the user to choose from under various conditions (i.e. sun, sports, etc.). However, it is not equipped with a true manually adjustable iris or shutter speed as other less advanced Sony DVD camcoders available.
